Welcome to RoboSquid!

Nearly a month! A new site framework is already in the works, and we have a simple frontpage portal too. Consider signing up and submitting content?

We're Still Here

on Nov 13, 2008 @ 07:55 PM

Hi squidbillies. You should have noticed slight changes to the forum. But that's not what I am announcing for.

Sadly, it seems that music projects were never featured on the Front Page I went ahead and featured 5. Go check them out while they're still hot! Remember to rate and comment, show some love.

Do some DailyMissions, and start some battles! I'm only one person. :-(
...and don't panic! Serr will be back.

The Pioneer Plaque

on Oct 5, 2008 @ 09:00 AM

It is about time that RS develops its own style and separates itself from thousands of default IPB-forums. And since we're such a creative community, why not making this a community-project where all members aide to build a nice new forum-layout!

So yes, that's what we're announcing right here: the creation of a recognisable RS-style. But also announcing the time that we need to reach out.

Forum skin
Although I personally like the default skin of IPB, it wouldn't harm anyone if we used something slightly more original. That means you can throw out suggestions of existing skins or make your own one. (or mix both concepts)

What will eventually be chosen as a skin shall be decided by everyone. (but the final decision obviously rests with the staff)
If you're going to make your own skin, please regularly consult with the member's wishes. You don't want to create a full skin, put a lot of time in it and see it unused afterwards!

Emoticons
We had an emoticon-battle in the battle arena a while ago and the used emoticons will most likely be chosen from that extended array of choices. If you'd like to make a new set though then you're most welcome to make your own suggestion. The reason why we didn't pick a set yet is because a set must be chosen depending on the skin. So first a skin, then the emoticon-set smile.gif

Banner
I know you all like to spread the word of RS. After all, the approach of the website has a promising future. But what's worth it if you can't reach out and tell the world we exist? That's why we need a smooth looking banner!

There are various approaches for making a successful banner:
1| A still image that draws your attention just by its beauty/style
2| A dynamic image that leeches stats and information from RS like your amount of EXP, the hot projects on the frontpage or your recently submitted projects.

The latter obviously demands some additional skill but the result may be even more appealing!

Hey, I want to make something!
Great, post whatever you want concerning the issue right here in this topic. Any suggestions on styling and reaching out can be put here too!

Fire away!

3-3-3-competition!

on Aug 20, 2008 @ 01:31 PM

Hello fellow RoboSquids!

We proudly announce the very first official game making competition here at RoboSquid! The 3-3-3-Competition!

What is the 3-3-3-Competition?

3 days to fiddle out a game idea, find possible team members and steam yourself ready for the big rush!
3 days to create your game
3 times the EXP!

What's the theme?

It's all about "3 days".
You could make something with 3 in-game days or just think out of the box. We're not strict, you know that.

Can I use pre-made resources?

Yes, you can use anything you previously created, just not full games. You'll obviously not receive EXP for old resources and we very much encourage to make new stuff! Using others people resources can only be done according to your country's copyright law. (aka, ask permission.)

How do I enter?

By submitting your project to RS before the due date and posting the project page in this topic.
You don't have to say you're going to enter but it'll boost anticipation! (Hence, do so!)

When is the deadline?

You now have approx. 3 days to come up with ideas and maybe team up with others.
The actual game making will start this Friday, and you have 3 days from then to complete your game.

Entries due Sunday 11:59 PM! (you can consider your own timezone for that)

What's to win?

You obviously battle for honor. And we will reward that honor by featuring the winning game on the front page! (depending on the quality and quantity of the entries there may be front page features for the runner-ups).

We'll also triple the EXP for the winner, but that's just a minor prize to spice things up =)

Hey, another bold title?

Yes, just wondering if I still have your attention. Now go make something awesome!

PS: contest idea launched by edenb, thank her for that =)

Portal And Contest

on Jul 28, 2008 @ 06:31 AM

Well, this was a bit late coming. I scrapped together a basic portal, so hopefully we'll have more people viewing and rating projects now.

I'd like to go on and semi-announce that a contest is in the works for RoboSquid. Without revealing too much, I will say it's a 3-day contest and the theme will revolve around something involving a 3. You will be allowed to use pre-made resources (engines, sprites, music, etc.) to make your entry higher quality, so you can start stockpiling resources if you wish.

There isn't a set contest date yet, but rest assured, it's soon. This is more of a pickup contest to celebrate RoboSquid, so there aren't any prizes besides EXP. Depending on how well this one goes, we might offer something..."more" in our second compo. ;)

Welcome!

on Jul 7, 2008 @ 05:47 AM

RoboSquid is launched, but it's far from finished. Looking ahead, that means there are updates, improvements, features galore, and a whole lot more awesomeness. It'll be one incredible journey I tell you.

Let's get down to site info :)

Project Forums

Undoubtedly the biggest change is the movement away from Clans. Instead of Clans, everyone can create a private "project forum" for any of their projects, without the help of an Admin to boot. Once you've created a few projects, you'll quickly figure out how this works, it's really intuitive.

But of course, just creating a project forum is no good: you need to have others who can access the forum, so all of you can get together and collaborate. That's what you use invites for. Once you've created a project forum, you'll see another button that lets you manage the invites for a project. You can invite anyone, and if they accept, they get perms to see everything in your forum.

Classes, Ratings, and EXP

Classes are gone and with them Class EXP. Ratings have also been demolished, I don't think anyone really liked them to begin with. In their stead now stands a single unified EXP stat. Unlike in GMClans where we tried to have it "mean" something, EXP means nothing on RoboSquid. It's just a little fun carry-over, so you can feel a little happy inside as you level up.

EXP is also earned differently on RoboSquid. Yes, you can engage in Battles and earn similar pots of ~0-100 EXP. But the majority of your earnings are going to come from projects you submit. Every time someone rates your project favorably, you (and all your coauthors) get a micro-deposit of EXP. Over time, that all adds up, and you gain levels.

Project Ratings

Currently, projects need at least 100 ratings in order for their rating to go live. Since the site's just launched, they'll be kinda useless for a while. Bear with it...although if it gets too bad, I'll lower the threshold later.

Project Uploads

Not much to say - just make sure you follow the guidelines. They're a bit stringent (sorry) but that's just how it is.

Bugs

If you come across something, post it in the Bug Reports forum with detailed steps on how to reproduce the bug. Then, try and contact me on IRC if at all possible. I won't be on IRC all day long, but when I am, that's the fastest way to tip me off.

Source Code

Yeah, the RoboSquid source code is freely available. My coding style ended up absolutely horrendous, so if you don't understand it, it's not your fault. The current copy also has a number of critical bugs - it's a pre-launch release candidate. I'll update it to a more stable version once I've stomped a few more bugs out.

Future Features

Unfortunately, I couldn't get a spizzling frontpage and project hub without a fair number of projects in the database, so I left those for future updates. They'll be up soon though - just get me a good stock of projects to work with!

I'm going to avoid big new features for now, so don't expect too many new features over the next few months. I intend to rewrite much of the codebase as the site grows. I don't think I'll be the only one coding RoboSquid in the near future, so I'd like to get our backend ready for a team of developers, versus one shot-to-hell guy.

Enjoy, and Cheers!
